China’s largest retailer has launched in the UK, seeking to compete with rivals including Amazon and Argos. The megastore JD.com, a £30billion ecommerce giant, will sell various products including technology, beauty, home, groceries and other essentials. Brits can buy from JD.com through its new Joybuy platform that launches today. Its platform will also feature dedicated brand stores including L’Oreal (OREP.PA), opens new tab, Braun, DeLonghi, BRITA, and Bodum.
The move comes following the US and Hong Kong listed company pulled out of talks for two separate deals to buy major UK retail brands – Currys and Argos – over the past two years.
The platform’s bosses believe the combination of its wide product range, convinience and « competitive » prices will attract new customers. According to, Matthew Nobbs, Joybuy UK managing director, the key selling point will be the platform’s fast deliveries to shoppers in major cities.
The group will run distribution sites from Milton Keynes and Luton to help deliver significant scope from the start of its operations in the UK. The retailer said next day deliveries will be available to about 17 million UK households.
Orders placed by 11am should arrive the same day, with orders placed before 11pm arriving the next day.
Matthew Nobbs, managing director of Joybuy UK, said the firm was « confident » about its growth prospects in the country.

He said: « We are here for a long time, as our CEO has said.
« We have to make sure the customer experience is really great. »
The company is launching into six new European markets, which include Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. The business struck a 2.2billion euro (£1.9 billion) deal to snap up Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy last year.
