A beloved 73-year-old furniture shop has confirmed its permanent closure. Manchester-based retailer Stocktons will launch a « closing down forever » sale from Friday, March 13, to clear its entire stock of luxury goods before it ceases trading.
In a major £1.5million clearance event, every single item of furniture will be discounted from 10am, so customers can pick up high-end beds, sofas, and dining furniture on a first-come, first-served basis. The family-run retailer had been in business since 1953, offering luxury furniture from British and global designers, including the likes of Natuzzi, Timothy Oulton and Calligaris.
He said: « My father started the business back in 1953 and it has been a privilege for the Stockton family to serve the people of Manchester over three generations.
« Now, I’m determined to mark the end of an era by giving our customers unrepeatable deals across our entire range.
“We’ve really enjoyed serving the people in the area over the past 73 years and we will bow out by giving customers one final chance to grab an unrepeatable deal before we close the doors for the final time. »
The site has been earmarked for a major redevelopment into towering residential and commercial buildings as part of a wider regeneration project.
Stocktons is far from the only high street retailer to close its doors. According to the Centre for Retail Research, more than 13,000 high street stores closed for good in 2024, followed by even more in 2025, including several banks.
Many shops stated that lower footfall contributed to challenging trading conditions, or less need for a physical shop, while the costs of running a shop on the high street had spiralled.
