ScotRail swiftly confirmed trains would not operate come Monday morning, with Glasgow’s rush hour presenting significant challenges for travellers as limited rail replacement services were provided. ScotRail has now confirmed Glasgow Central will remain shut on Tuesday (March 10), alongside further unwelcome news for passengers – disruption is expected to persist for several days ahead.

The rail operator stated that no ScotRail services will run to or from Glasgow Central High Level on Tuesday, whilst services typically operating via Glasgow Central Low Level will continue but will not stop at the low-level station. Passengers are urged to travel via Argyle Street or Anderston Station whilst checking their journeys beforehand, as numerous routes throughout western Scotland remain suspended or running with modifications owing to the fire.

ScotRail continues providing customers with updates – including particulars of affected routes and guidance on claiming refunds for unused tickets – through the ScotRail website, app, and via its social media platforms. Station personnel are available throughout the network to assist wherever feasible.

Emergency services and Network Rail continue evaluating the damage caused by the major fire, whilst ScotRail will issue further service updates once additional information emerges.

ScotRail chief operating officer, David Ross, said: « Glasgow Central will remain closed on Tuesday whilst the impact of the fire in the building next to the station is assessed and we expect disruption to continue for several days.

« We’d like to thank our colleagues in the fire and emergency services who worked incredibly hard to tackle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the station itself. We know this closure will cause significant disruption for our customers, and we’re very sorry for the impact this will have on their journeys.

« Our teams are working hard to keep people moving where possible, and we’d encourage customers to check their journey before travelling using the ScotRail app or website. »

Scottish Fire and Rescue have confirmed that teams are still working to cool down hotspots within the building’s stonework, in collaboration with structural engineers assessing the stability of the remaining structure.

As of 3.30pm on Monday (March 9), eight appliances, including three high-reach vehicles, were still at the scene.

« We cannot speculate on the cause of the fire at this time. In line with fire investigation protocols, a multi-agency investigation will be conducted, however due to the significant damage that has occurred this may be hampered, » a spokesperson for the fire service stated, adding that « due to the proximity of the incident to the railway infrastructure and the presence of significant debris, Glasgow Central Station remains closed ».
