Tottenham fans were seen marching out of the stadium at half-time of their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. The north London outfit’s crisis went from bad to worse as they suffered a nightmare first half against Palace, sparked by captain Micky ven de Ven seeing red.
The reigning Europa League winners had taken the lead during Thursday night’s encounter, with Dominic Solanke converting from close range to give the hosts a welcome lead. Spurs had been dragged into even more danger the night before when Nottingham Forest and West Ham United both picked up unexpected results, cutting the gap to Spurs in 16th.
It always felt as if disaster might’ve been around the corner, but few inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would’ve been predicting what came next. Van de Ven was given a straight red card after dragging Ismaila Sarr to the ground inside the penalty area, with the ex-Watford ace stepping up to convert the penalty.
With alarm bells now ringing, things began to spiral for the 2019 Champions League finalists, as Jorgen Strand Larsen continued his impressive start to life with Palace by firing the visitors ahead. But before the referee could put an end to Spurs’ first-half misery, Sarr was on target again to give the Selhurst Park outfit a 3-1 lead at the break.
It was the cue that some needed to head for the exit door, with the outside television cameras having captured plenty of fans walking away from the stadium. Meanwhile, those who stuck around in the stadium bowl met the half-time whistle with loud boos, letting interim boss Igor Tudor know about their dissatisfaction.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage, former Palace striker Glenn Murray said: « I can see a shot of the outside of the stadium, and they are going home without any doubt. To be honest, I can understand why. It has been a poor performance – they got away with one – it was a warning shot from Palace. »
Meanwhile Jonathan Pearce added: « It is deathly silent here. I can remember them going down in 1976-77 and there are real echoes of this because that was a terrific Tottenham Hotspur football club, and they let things slide. They let things slide, and they paid the price. »
Before commenting: « We spoke to a Tottenham fan who had been coming here for 60 years at half-time, and he said it is the worst he has ever known it. I spoke to someone who I can’t name, but he is close to Tottenham Hotspur behind the scenes, and he said the club has been broken for seven years. This club is in total disarray. »
