‘Explosions’ at US military base in Iraq as Iran ramps up missile attacks | World | News

Preliminary reports suggest that Iraqi forces successfully intercepted a drone that was attempting to strike Victoria Airbase overnight on Wednesday, March 4. Additional rockets were fired at the camp by armed groups, though Iraqi security forces reportedly intercepted and prevented some of the attacks. Videos emerging from the scene show a drone crashing in Baghdad’s Al-Bu’aitha area, with security personnel present.

It is unknown at this time if any injuries were sustained in the attack.

Serving as a strategic hub for operations, logistics, and coordination, the Victoria Base in Baghdad is critical for both military operations and air security

It is primarily used by Iraqi security forces and coalition forces, including the U.S. military.

This is not the first time the base has been the target of rocket and drone attacks by armed militias in Iraq, especially those linked to Iran, due to its strategic and operational importance.

Just a couple of days ago local reports stated that one drone crashed inside the special operations area of the base, while another was intercepted by US air defenses. Plumes of smoke were spotted billowing into the air on Monday in what looked to be part of a larger wave of strikes attributed to Iran and associated militia groups.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan warned that the « Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures ».
