Bruno Fernandes has offered a glimpse into Benjamin Sesko’s drive to succeed at Manchester United. The striker scored the winning goal in United’s 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace in Sunday’s Premier League win at Old Trafford.
The win over Palace lifted United to third spot in the Premier League standings, overtaking Aston Villa, who suffered defeat to Wolves earlier during the weekend.
Michael Carrick has now secured six victories from his seven fixtures as United’s interim head coach, with such results placing the club in a favourable position to secure Champions League qualification.
Sesko has been instrumental in United’s recent upturn in form, finding the net four times over the past five fixtures to bring his total tally for the season up to nine goals across all competitions during his first campaign at Old Trafford.
Fernandes delivered the assist for Sesko’s match-winning strike against Palace, and the Red Devils captain has revealed how his teammate fully understands the weight of expectation upon his shoulders following his summer arrival, reports the Mirror.
« He’s [Sesko] a very good player, we just wanted to get his confidence,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.
“He is a kid that wants to improve. He is never just happy with a goal. He is very aware that he needs to score week in, week out for this club.
“Hopefully he will have more goals between now and the end of the season. »
Fernandes also discussed United’s pursuit of a top-four spot in the Premier League, which would secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
United sit in third place going into the midweek fixtures on equal points with Aston Villa, who slipped to fourth, and three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool following their victory over West Ham at the weekend.
« There are a lot of games to go still and it is important that we don’t feel that we are in the position that we need to be,” Fernandes said. “We need to make as many points as we can. »
United travel to Newcastle this week as they face Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening. With Premier League matches scheduled for Tuesday, United could find themselves further down the standings by the time kick-off arrives in the North East.
