A woman who shared a cell with the disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell says she had such poor hygiene behind bars that fellow inmates complained she “stank of body odour ». Providing an insight into life behind bars, the fellow inmate alleges that the 64-year-old had “horrible personal hygiene” and would shower only once or twice a week.
The socialite was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 after being convicted by a federal jury on five charges, including sex trafficking, for recruiting and grooming four girls between 1994 and 2004 for sexual encounters with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The convicted sex offender had been her boyfriend at the time, and died in 2019 in prison while awaiting his own sex trafficking trial. Maxwell was held at FCI Tallahassee in Florida from July 2022 until summer 2025.

During her time in Tallahassee Maxwell was in close contact with an inmate who told TMZ that most prisoners shunned Maxwell, labelling her a « Chomo » prison slang for child molester and Maxwell would spend the majority of her time working out, adding to her issue with body odour.
The former inmate said she was unaware of any attempts to assault Maxwell at the low-security prison, explaining that other prisoners steered clear because they feared being sent to “the hole.” She added: « It’s just not worth it. »
She described “the hole” as a separate unit where inmates are kept locked in their cells around the clock and served cold food where conditions are extremely rough.
Maxwell was transferred out of the Florida prison in August and moved to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas.
The minimum-security Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Bryan in Texas is a facility often used for white-collar inmates, leading to controversy and claims of preferential treatment.
In a statement, the family of the late Virginia Giuffre – one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims – expressed their « horror and disgust » at what they described as the « preferential treatment » given to Ghislaine Maxwell.
They further condemned the move as having been made « without any notification to Maxwell’s victims ».
