Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has insisted that Marcus Rashford could command three times the £26million price tag attached to his Barcelona loan deal – provided he maintains consistency in his displays. The striker departed United last summer on a season-long loan to Barcelona.
Rashford has found the net 10 times whilst providing 13 assists, with widespread reports indicating the Spanish giants are eager to secure a permanent transfer when the window opens. Yet reports emerging from Spain suggest that Hansi Flick’s side will attempt to negotiate the fee downwards in a bid to secure his signature for less.
Should an agreement prove elusive, the prospect of another loan arrangement featuring an obligation to buy has also been mooted. Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be monitoring the England international’s situation and have been tipped to launch a bid if Barcelona fail to complete a permanent deal.
The Mirror revealed earlier this month that officials at United have been left with regrets over sanctioning Rashford’s move to Barcelona for a potential £26m. Whether Barcelona will simply pay the £26m asking price this summer remains uncertain, though Sharpe is adamant United should reject any attempts to reduce the valuation.
« I don’t think the club should be accepting anything less than £26m, » he told MEN Sport (via BetBrain). « I think he’s an absolute worldie of a player when he’s on his day.
« If he can be consistent, he’s worth treble that at least. It’s a difficult one because he’s an unbelievable player, it wasn’t working out for him before he left, he didn’t look happy, so if his heart is set on leaving the club and Barcelona don’t want to pay £26m, bring him back.
« Sell him to someone else that does want to pay the fee you’re looking for. Is there a way back for him at United? I’m not sure. If he would be happy to come back and work hard to be part of the squad, there’s no reason why he can’t come back. « He would be an asset to the squad. But if he’s unhappy and can’t produce his best, then he’ll have to go elsewhere. But I wouldn’t be accepting less than £26m that’s for sure. »
