Armed police raced to Leeds General Infirmary on Tuesday afternoon after a man arrived to the hospital with injuries « consistent with a firearm discharge ». Officers were called shortly after 5.30pm when hospital staff alerted police that a man in his late twenties had presented at the Accident and Emergency department suffering suspected gunshot wounds.
The incident triggered a major emergency response, with armed officers, multiple police vehicles and forensic teams seen outside the hospital as a cordon was put in place around the entrance. Police stressed the shooting did not happen at the hospital or within its grounds.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: « Officers were called shortly after 5.30pm by hospital staff after a man in his late twenties presented at the hospital with injuries consistent with a firearm discharge.
« His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
« The incident did not occur at the hospital or on its grounds and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of what took place and how the man came to be injured.
« Two men have been arrested and a police cordon is in place. »
Scene-of-crime officers were seen working next to a silver Volvo car while armed officers guarded the entrance.
Detectives are now working to establish where the shooting took place. Enquiries remain ongoing.
