The picturesque town of Mdina, in Malta, is a paradise for those seeking a laid-back atmosphere, a warmer climate, and a chance to step back in time. The walled medieval hilltop town is brimming with stunning Baroque architecture and winding, narrow streets and is often referred to as an open-air museum.
Found in the heart of Malta, with a population of just around 250 residents, Mdina is a fascinating place to explore within its ancient city walls. It’s just half an hour by car or public transport from the capital of Malta, with one-way direct Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Valletta starting from just £15.

Adding to its allure is the promise of blistering rays during the UK winter months, with a warm 18C expected in March and up to 21C in April. Plus, with the ancient walls providing shelter, it’s expected to feel even warmer.
Mdina, which means ‘fortified place’, has often been described as the ‘silent city’ due to its small number of inhabitants and ghost town atmosphere. No cars are permitted in the city, except for a few exceptions, including for some residents, which only adds to its peaceful scene.
It’s even been reported that there are signs scattered around the city encouraging visitors to be quiet. Yet, its quietness is all a part of the charm, offering a serene day out wandering along meandering limestone lanes lined with ancient walls for a journey back in time.

The 17th-century Baroque St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most striking features in the town’s main square, with visitors invited to marvel at its incredible interiors and marble tombstones. The square is brimming with centuries-old historical landmarks that feel like stepping into a fairy tale or a medieval movie.
For a closer look into the city’s history, there’s the Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, the Mdina Dungeons and the National Museum of Natural History. But visitors might recognise the Mdina Gate, also known as the main gate, as it famously served as the entrance to King’s Landing in the first series of Game of Thrones.
Bastion Square is another popular area to explore, located at the edge of the walls and offering spectacular views of Malta’s rolling countryside and built-up areas that stretch to the turquoise waters. Further panoramic vistas across the island can be found at the Fontanella Tea Garden, famed for its selection of homemade cakes and one of the most well-known cafeterias in Malta.

One visitor recalled their experience at the gardens on TripAdvisor and shared: « Really good, so good we went twice. Had afternoon lunch, cake was absolutely fab. Went back later that evening for dinner. The food was excellent, and the price was reasonable. Definitely recommend, but you may have to queue as a popular spot. »
Another traveller couldn’t recommend a visit to the town high enough as they said: « Mdina old city is a must visit – a small settlement packed with history, an incredibly well preserved medieval fortress with palazzos, churches and other sights along its cobbled streets and narrow paths. Game of Thrones fans will recognise some of the locations from season 1, as it was filmed here. There are artisan souvenir shops and carriage rides, but above all, just enjoy the feel of the place, as it is very unique. Stunning views over the island from the walls are a must-see! »
