TUI has introduced a fresh city break location to its schedule for spring, and it’s situated in a region of Spain that’s gaining traction with British travellers.

In a Lonely Planet article, one travel writer observed: « When your plane banks toward Bilbao Airport for the final approach, the lush forest passing below looks nothing like the Spain you thought you knew. »
The climate and terrain of this region stand in stark contrast to the arid, sun-drenched south, offering milder conditions that provide welcome relief from summer heatwaves. During March and April, daytime temperatures reach approximately 17C, whilst throughout summer, they climb to around 26C, as the south frequently swelters in mid-30s heat.
The area also receives greater rainfall than its southern counterpart, lending the surrounding landscape a vibrant emerald appearance.
Bilbao is positioned along the banks of the Nervión River, with one of its most beloved attractions being its historic quarter, known as Casco Viejo. Featuring vibrant buildings from medieval times, an impressive cathedral, and the stunning neoclassical Plaza Nueva, brimming with bars and eateries, it makes for an ideal city escape.
By comparison, the Guggenheim Museum, with its distinctive Frank Gehry-designed facade, appears unlike anything else in the metropolis, yet captivates visitors with its extensive contemporary art collection. Even without stepping inside, it’s worthwhile strolling past to admire its titanium-covered exterior gleaming in the sunlight.

Beyond its cultural attractions, Bilbao is celebrated for its vibrant culinary landscape, and whilst exploring the streets, you’ll discover numerous pintxos establishments. A northern variation of tapas, pintxos are miniature bread portions crowned with ingredients ranging from jamón to seafood or cheese, secured with a cocktail stick.
Another renowned product of Northern Spain is its Rioja wines, which are the ideal accompaniment for a plate of pintxos. You can indulge in a day trip to vineyards near the city, or simply pop into one of the numerous wine bars for a tasting.
