Adding one thing to your morning yoghurt or porridge can significantly improve gut health and your metabolism, an expert has confirmed.
There is nothing better than starting the day with a breakfast that you love and that is good for you.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and making sure your plate or bowl is full of nutrients that help your body is an absolute gamechanger.
Whether you have porridge, yoghurt, toast or even some pancakes, there is one ingredient you can add to your breakfast to help your gut health and metabolism.
She said: « One of the ways I support my own gut microbiome is simply adding a humble handful of berries to my breakfast in the morning.
« This is because colourful plant foods, like blueberries, are packed with plant compounds called polyphenols.
« Polyphenols aren’t probiotics, so they don’t directly add bacteria to your gut and they’re also not fibre, meaning they don’t directly feed the bacteria that’s in your gut either.
« This is where gut science starts to get exciting. Polyphenols are increasingly being recognised in research as microbial modulators, meaning they help create a more supportive gut environment by influencing which bacteria thrive and what they produce.
« More good quality research is still needed in this area, but what we do know is that diets rich in colourful plant foods, such as blueberries, raspberries, herbs and spices, are associated with better gut and metabolic health overall. »
According to the NHS blueberries are full of fiber, vitamin c and vitamin K. They also have have an anti-inflammatory effect and A 2024 study found that regularly eating the fruit could significantly improve blood flow and blood vessel dilation.
