The latest big stories from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games

  • Figure Skating Joy: American figure skater Isabeau Levito inisted she didn’t want to be evicted from the Olympic Village once she competes in her events, speaking more fondly about her experience there than the competition itself. The teenage star said: « I’ve spent every night in the [Olympic] Village. It’s been everything and more. And you can’t evict me.”
  • A Homecoming on Ice: For Levito, competing in the Games feels like a homecoming because of her close family ties to the host city of Milan. She added: « I don’t think there’s anything not to enjoy [about the Olympic Village]. I haven’t even got to compete yet and I feel like my experience is already complete. Not complete but I’m having a blast. The best time. »

  • Ice Hockey Brawl: The French hockey federation has imposed a ban on Pierre Crinon for the rest of the Winter Olympics following his fight with Team Canada’s Tom Wilson during Sunday’s 10-2 defeat. Canada dominated France on Sunday but Crinon and Wilson engaged in a brawl, which was the first of its kind at the Winter Games since 1998.

  • Internal Suspension: While Olympics officials chose not to issue further bans, the French Ice Hockey Federation took a much harder line by suspending Crinon for the remainder of the Games. The federation cited his « provocative behaviour » after the ejection as a primary reason for the harsh internal disciplinary action.

  • Curling Cheating Storm: Curling was rocked by accusations of « double-touching » during a match between heavyweights Canada and Sweden last week. Swedish skip Niklas Edin alleged that Canadian players were illegally touching the stones after release, leading to a series of heated, expletive-laden exchanges on the ice.

  • Official Warnings Issued: Following the controversy, the World Curling Committee issued a formal verbal warning to the Canadian team regarding the aggressive language used during the match. But the controversy continued this week as the Canadian women’s curling team were pulled up for another double-touching infraction against Switzerland in a narrow 8-7, leading to men’s captain Brad Jacobs to wonder if his nation was being targeted.

  • Winter Olympics Chaos: The BBC announced that the Winter Olympics women’s snowboard slopestyle final and the first and second rounds of men’s and women’s aerials qualification were postponed due to heavy snow at the Livigno Snow Park. A decision from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) followed athletes being unable to complete practice runs.

  • Weather Disruptions: New dates and times have yet to be announced but it is said the events will take place on Wednesday, with the BBC saying more information on matters will be announced shortly. Fitting these runs into an already stacked schedule will cause chaos for athletes and organisers alike, with just five days of competition remaining before Sunday’s closing ceremony at Verona Arena.
