Vietnam has unveiled plans for the world’s largest football stadium, with 135,000 seats, dwarfing Wembley and Emirates stadiums. The mega stadium forms part of a £28billion proposed sports park covering 9,000 hectares near Hanoi.
If built, Trong Dong Stadium would become the largest in the world, rivalling North Korea’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, with an estimated capacity of 114,000, and Hassan II Stadium in Morocco, which can host 115,000 spectators. The proposed stadium’s design is based on Vietnam‘s Đông Sơn bronze drums, a traditional musical instrument decorated with geometric patterns which dates back centuries.
The scheme’s backers said the landmark would combine traditional Vietnamese culture with a modern vision, forming the centrepiece of an Olympic Sports City project.
Inspirations for the scheme include London’s Wembley Stadium, Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium and Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, according to The Sun.
Its seating capacity dwarfs Wembley’s 90,000 seats, the Emirates Stadium’s 60,704 and Old Trafford’s 74,197.
Plans for Trong Dong Stadium were approved on December 14 by Hanoi’s People’s Council, with an estimated investment totalling £25.72billion (US$35bn).
The park scheme is made up of four zones, comprising an urban area with transport links, a sports complex and event spaces.
A ground-breaking ceremony was scheduled for December 19. Vietnamese media reported that the stadium and sports complex will be completed by 2030 and the whole project by 2035.
Trong Dong Stadium’s organisers say of their website: « An ambitious project planned for the southern outskirts of Hanoi envisages the construction of the largest stadium in the world, with a capacity of 135,000 spectators.
« Designed as a football-specific venue, the stadium will feature a retractable roof, a movable pitch, and a wide range of advanced technological solutions. »
The site states no stadiums in Vietnam match the scale of Trong Dong Stadium, although two other modern stadiums were previously announced.
PVF Stadium is planned for the southern outskirts of Hanoi and Rach Chiec Stadium has been proposed for Ho Chi Minh City.
