Cheapest pints in UK are in city surrounded by gorgeous countryside | UK | Travel

The price of a pint is steadily on the rise. Finding a pub serving pints for less than £5 is almost an extreme sport now, but there are still some places where you don’t have to break the bank.

New research from takepayments has revealed the UK cities where it is cheapest to have a drink. The study analysed 34 major UK cities across 16 affordability factors, including housing, transport, salaries, and non-essential costs (like the price of a pint). Each city was scored out of 10 for overall affordability, pinpointing the cheapest places to enjoy a drink in the UK.

When it comes to a pint, the cheapest city in the country for a drink is Derby, coming in at just £3.60. That price is perfect for a relaxing drink after exploring the city – and there’s plenty to explore.

Derby is in the East Midlands, nestled in the county of Derbyshire and lying alongside the River Derwent. The city is a great base for exploring the surrounding British countryside, with plenty of walking paths and cycle tracks.

One of the best is the Vicar Wood & Mackworth loop from Markeaton Park. The 6.1km walk takes around an hour and a half, starting from the Mundy Playcentre car park. It meanders through farm land and parks and is perfect for families.

There’s also Calke Abbey – a rundown stately manor with rambling gardens and an incredible natural history collection. Once an Augustine Priory, the building then passed into the hands of Sir Henry Harpur in 1622. The home was passed down through the generations and after 1924, almost nothing was done to alter Calke, although it was gradually modernised.

Now, the house has been preserved much like it was by the National Trust, and this gives a unique perspective on how life was.

Once you have explored the home and gardens, you can check out the cafe and gift shop in the home – perfect for picking up souvenirs.
