The world’s longest flight links America to Asia, with passengers confined to their seats for nearly 19 hours. The current record holder for the longest long-haul journey is Singapore Airlines’ route from New York’s JFK Airport to Singapore Changi.
This 9,537-mile trip has a duration of 18 hours and 50 minutes and was introduced by the airline in 2018. The route is operated by Singapore Airlines’ newest Airbus A350-900ULR, capable of flying over 20 hours non-stop. The aircraft can sustain such lengthy flights due to a modified fuel system, which boosts the plane’s total fuel capacity to an astonishing 24,000 litres.
However, the journey isn’t readily accessible, as Singapore Airlines doesn’t offer an economy class on this route. Instead, Singapore Airlines provides 67 Business Class seats and 94 Premium Economy Class seats.
In Premium Economy, passengers can relish the perks of additional legroom, a footrest, and an adjustable headrest. They can also use noise-cancelling headphones and WiFi throughout their flight.
Business class passengers enjoy utmost privacy, with their seats transforming into fully flat beds for a restful sleep during travel.
The aircraft boasts a range of premium features including elevated ceilings, more spacious windows and specially designed lighting intended to minimise jetlag. The airline maintains that the plane’s innovative carbon composite airframe additionally enables enhanced air quality.
Those seeking a ticket are likely to be extremely wealthy, with fares typically reaching well into five figures. Singapore Airlines’ Chief Executive, Mr Goh Choon Phong, previously stated that the new route is « the fastest way » to travel between the two major cities.
