The BBC have released a statement after their legendary commentator and TV host John Virgo died. Tributes poured in on Wednesday morning as the ‘voice of snooker’ passed away at the age of 79, after decades of work for the broadcaster after his retirement as a professional snooker player.
He enjoyed an 18-year career, winning the 1979 UK Championship in addition to four non-ranking titles. Virgo co-presented TV programme Big Break from 1991 to 2002 with Jim Davidson, and took up a role commentating on snooker for the BBC, with his last message coming at the Masters two weeks ago.
The BBC’s statement read: « Some sad news to bring you. Snooker legend and BBC commentator John Virgo has died aged 79. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. »
Virgo had been inducted into the World Snooker Hall of Fame after an incredible playing career, but he was perhaps most well known for his efforts away from the professional tour.
His show with Davidson was hugely popular and in retirement took part in a host of exhibition events, where Virgo became known for pulling off mesmerising trick shots.
World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis announced the news of Virgo’s on social media, writing: « Heartbreaking to share the news that we’ve lost the great ‘JV’ John Virgo this morning, he passed away in Spain. Rosie and Brooke-Leah would like everyone to know. Our hearts go out to them both, Gary and the grandchildren.
« JV was doing what he loved to do right up until the end, entertaining everyone. Such an important person in my life but in our sport in general.
« An amazingly loyal friend to me, and someone you felt was sat with you at the match when he was commentating on TV. Hard to take this one… one great person who touched so many lives and loved the game. We will never forget you bud. RIP JV. »
A World Snooker Tour statement added: « Everyone at World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo, aged 79. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, JV. »
