Emma Raducanu torn apart as Wimbledon winner makes Chelsea comparison | Tennis | Sport

Cash reacted to her latest change of coach while covering the Australian Open men’s singles semi-finals on BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra. The 1987 Wimbledon champion said during Tennis Breakfast: « The question would be: Is she giving it a fair shot with somebody? They seem to be coming and going so quickly. She’s had more coaches than Chelsea have had managers. »

Chelsea are on their fifth permanent boss since Raducanu won the US Open in 2021, with the latest change coming on New Year’s Day. The British No.1, meanwhile, is now looking for the tenth coach since that same year.

Raducanu worked with Nigel Sears when reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon that summer. However, it was Andrew Richardson in her coaching box during the US Open, a spell that lasted just two months and ended weeks after her success Stateside.

She has also briefly worked with Dmitry Tursunov, Mark Petchey, Nick Cavaday, Sebastian Sachs, Torben Beltz and Vladimir Platenik. Cavaday, who was her childhood mentor, remains the longest-serving coach of her career, with his stint ending due to health issues last year.

Raducanu, however, has announced her latest split amicably. She said of Roig: « Thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me, and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on and off the court. While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared. »

Cash is at a loss for where she goes from here. He said: « I don’t really know; it’s a mystery to me. Sometimes there’s too much information. You’ve got to try and work it out yourself, or you try and find someone who’s aligned with you, and keep trying. It’s hard to know. I know she works hard; she didn’t have the ideal preparation coming into the Australian season. »

The Australian also said: « The best players in the world have a steady coaching system, and they tweak it a little bit from time to time. [Roger] Federer had it a long time, added a couple of people; [Rafael] Nadal, [Novak] Djokovic had that stint, and then he added Goran [Ivanisevic] in for a bunch of years.

« Tweak it a little bit here and there; you need some more information to get better and better, but it’s very hard to get better when you don’t give it a full shot. I’m not saying that was the case, I just know that’s the reality of it. »
