Yorkshire appears to be brimming with countless hidden treasures, and this stunning waterfall is amongst them, attracting visitors with its renowned features that make it exceptional within the country.
Situated in the Yorkshire Dales, nestled within a sheltered cove that rests tranquilly behind the village of Hardraw, lies the celebrated Hardraw Force. It stands as England’s tallest single-drop waterfall and presents quite a spectacle to witness.
The water plunges an impressive 100-foot drop, equivalent to 30 metres, maintaining its status as one continuous uninterrupted cascade. Visitors from across the nation can witness this natural wonder by traversing through a picturesque valley and may even venture behind the curtain of tumbling water.
However, its impressive height isn’t the sole factor placing this waterfall on the map, as many will recognise its scenic backdrop from a beloved film. Hardraw Force appears in a memorable scene from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the 1991 classic featuring Kevin Costner.
The unforgettable sequence showed Maid Marian, portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, observing Robin Hood bathing beneath this very waterfall. It was shot from the gorge which encircles the drop like a natural amphitheatre and forms part of the grounds belonging to the historic Green Dragon Inn.

The location is owned by the person who also owns the traditional pub, and they have worked hard to restore the area to its natural splendour for visitors to appreciate.
The grounds span an impressive 15 acres, featuring a car park for guests and a well-maintained Heritage Centre, which doubles as the gateway to the spectacular water feature.
Entry currently costs £4 per person, though reductions are offered for families and pensioners. Well-behaved dogs are permitted on site, and the pathway is deliberately gravelled to accommodate wheelchair users.

A recent guest at Hardraw Force documented their visit on TripAdvisor, saying: « Excellent place to visit, especially after rainfall. An easy walk and a harder one if you are fit. Dogs are welcome too. Go early if you can, and you may see a red squirrel. »
Another reviewer added: « The waterfall itself was spectacular. A lovely flow of water into the pool below, this provided a lovely picturesque setting for everyone to enjoy. Absolutely worth visiting for the beautiful scenery. »
One guest also noted: « Visited the waterfall today, cold but had blue skies and sunshine, which made the waterfall even more spectacular. It’s privately owned and costs £4 p/p which goes to maintaining the falls and the gorgeous surrounding area.
« It has a small on-site cafe and toilets, which were very clean. The walks around the waterfall are easy to a little more challenging, we had stayed at the lovely Green Dragon Inn that backs straight onto the entrance for the waterfall. »
