A huge upgrade is heading for one major capital and it could totally transform transport in the city. The first line is set to open in 2026, with the exciting development due to be fully completed by 2031.
The Grand Paris Express is a new metro network which will see significant investment to modernise transport in Paris. Choose Paris Region says: “The Grand Paris Express is revolutionising mobility in the Paris Region by offering direct journeys between the densest districts around Paris, interconnected with 29 existing metro, tramway, RER, and suburban train lines.” The project will involve laying down 200 kilometres of new track, as well as constructing 68 new stations.
It adds that journey times will be cut, with travelling from Pont de Sèvres to Noisy-Champs now taking just 39 minutes, instead of an hour.
The metro is automated and it will operate all year round, with high frequency and extended hours, ensuring optimal availability.
The Grand Paris Express will connect the three Paris Region airports with business districts, scientific hubs, as well as numerous cultural, health, and sports facilities.
The expanded metro lines will make it easier for visitors to explore lesser-known destinations or travel seamlessly between iconic landmarks and emerging districts.
Paris is a magnet for tourists, attracting some 50 million per year – all of whom are no doubt eager to discover why France’s capital is often called the “city of love.”
The eco-friendly line will help to boost the local economy and enhance the potential of business hubs, all while promoting sustainable mobility.
Choose Paris Region says: “Once operational, it will reduce CO₂ emissions by 10.9 million tons by 2050 by limiting car usage.”
The lines will open gradually, with more to become operational in the next few years.
