‘I’ve been on 50 cruises and there are five things you should never buy on ships’ | Cruise | Travel

And many of the cruise lines also require every passenger in a room to be on the same package, Megan says. As someone who doesn’t drink much, Megan says it means the package simply isn’t worth the cost.

Writing in BusinessInsider, she said: “I stick to ordering my beverages à la carte. It saves me money and makes me really think about what I’m ordering.”

While many cruise passengers might fancy getting pampered on board their ship, Megan says she skips the salon and gets her favourite beauty treatments done before embarkation day. She says that ships often offer “premium, much higher” prices than at home.

She also enjoys the feeling of walking on the ship “looking and feeling great”. The seasoned traveller now avoids room service as well, unless it is free of charge of course.

In recent years she has noticed an increase in the number of trips charging for food delivery. So Megan now opts to head out to the buffet or dining halls instead.

She explains: “If I really want to eat in my cabin because I need some downtime or want to watch a movie, I ask the staff if there are any take-out options available.”

Another way Megan likes to save money is by skipping out on the souvenir lanyard. Many cruisers often find themselves splashing out on a lanyard to help keep track of that all-important room key.

These often double-up as your ID and payment card on the ship. But instead of purchasing one Megan has found herself putting her key card in her phone case so she always has it with her.

Finally Megan says she avoids booking excursions through her cruise line. She does however accept that booking through the cruise line means the ship often waits if you find yourself running late.

This means if you are thinking about booking your excursions through a third-party, then you need to make sure you’re back in plenty of time.

Megan said: “I like to explore the ports on my own or with a third-party excursion company. These excursions are typically more affordable and offer comparable experiences, and I always read a lot of reviews before booking.
