A Russian unit has lost over 700 soldiers in fighting in Pokrovsk, as Putin‘s army desperately tries to seize full control of the eastern city. Pokrovsk is a vital logistics and transport hub on Ukraine‘s eastern frontline, and is also considered to be the « gateway to Donetsk ».
Putin’s commanders have amassed a force of around 155,000 troops, as they step up attacks on the besieged city. Kyiv has rushed in reinforcements, including special force units, as it tries to hold back the Russian onslaught. Russia has sustained a massive number of casualties in the course of the almost two year battle for the eastern city.
Jack Watling – a defence expert at the Royal United Services think tank – estimated that Russia is losing more than 20,000 soldiers a month in the Pokrovsk sector.
A Russian medic has described the horrific slaughter, as commanders throw soldiers into the battle with little thought for their lives.
Footage from the battle, which is too graphic to show, shows retreating soldiers moving amid piles of dismembered bodies, many of whom have suffered significant blast injuries consistent with mines.
In a video blog, she said she was serving with the 39th Separate Guards Motorised Rifle Brigade in Pokrovsk.
Many of the soldiers in her unit are « young guys », aged between 19 and 20 years old. She described how the soldiers were deployed in an assault that soon ran into terrible difficulties.
« They ran, in short, into a Ukrainian minefield and it just tore them apart, » she explained. « We had to run, the medics, to pull them out. One had his heel torn off, another was f**ked up, another came in with his shoulder through his arm.
« There’s always this kind of sh*t going on there. They get f**ked up, then run who knows where, then you have to drag them out, take them away.
« Look, I have these lists, I have 48 pages. These are the dead, these are ours… In total, if you count, 790 people. »
The brigade is under the command of Colonel Denis Nikolaevich Polulyak and has had a problem with discipline. The unit had over 900 men listed as AWOL as of 2 December 2025, according to recently leaked documents.
