A devastating disaster film inspired by a Spanish family’s true ordeal is departing Prime Video on Christmas Eve.
Launched in 2012, The Impossible follows a family of five as they confront a catastrophic tsunami whilst on holiday in Thailand.
The narrative draws from the genuine 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and earthquake that wreaked havoc across Asian nations including Thailand, India and Sri Lanka on Boxing Day.
BAFTA nominee J. A. Bayona directed the production, which stars Naomi Watts as Maria Bennett, inspired by actual survivor María Belón, with Ewan McGregor portraying her husband Henry (originally Enrique Álvarez), reports the Daily Record.
The adventure drama also features Marvel star Tom Holland in his first big screen appearance as the couple’s son, Lucas.
As you’d expect from a natural disaster film, The Impossible delivers gut-wrenching moments as the relatives battle to reach safety.
The skilled ensemble delivered remarkable performances, with Watts securing an Academy Award nomination for Best Leading Actress.
Despite missing out on the award, cinema-goers were thoroughly captivated by the British actress’ contribution. On Rotten Tomatoes, one admirer praised the actors.
« What a tragic and sad true story film, it was a really touching movie and it makes you feel grounded [and] cherish what you have, » they shared.
« The acting was phenomenal Naomi and Tom Holland is chef’s kiss acting. This movie is highly recommended. »
Another viewer agreed, praising Holland’s contribution: « Tom Holland’s performance in this movie, as a child actor, is nothing short of astonishing.
« This film is a heart-pounding re-enactment of a tidal wave’s impact on a holidaying family. It never slows down and keeps you invested from start to finish. »
In the meantime, a third critic shared their emotional response: « I’m crying still just from the first hour…its so horrific, sad, yet amazing how strong that young man was…great actor. »
