Donald Trump has warned Europe that it is on the verge of « civilisational erasure » because of mass migration, suggesting it will be « unrecognisable » within 20 years. The US president made the stark prediction as part of his national security strategy, setting out his administration’s priorities on the world stage. Alongside cementing Mr Trump‘s long-held « America first » approach, he is committed to « cultivating resistance » in Europe and reviving « Western identity », the report said.
« It is more than plausible that within a few decades at the latest, certain NATO members will become majority non-European, » it continued. « Should present trends continue, the continent will be unrecognisable in 20 years or less. » The 33-page document has provoked backlash from European politicians including Germany‘s foreign minister Johann Wadephul, who said his country did not need « outside advice ».
Mr Trump’s « roadmap » to ensuring the US remains « the greatest and most successful nation in human history » built on views he propounded in a speech to the United Nations in September, where he warned that « immigration and suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe ».
The security strategy, which is usually released by presidents once each term, has traditionally laid the framework for the remainder of their time in power, including setting out their priorities on the world stage.
As well as hinting that « certain European countries » may not have « economies and militaries strong enough to remain reliable allies », it gestured at support for far-right parties such as Germany’s AfD, which he has defended in the past.
Mr Trump seemingly praised the rise of « patriotic European parties » and urged these « political allies of America … to promote this revival in spirit ».
The report also accused « transnational bodies » including the European Union of « undermining political liberty and sovereignty » through « censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and the loss of national identities and self-confidence ».
Foreign minister Wadephul dismissed the allegations that Europe censors free speech and suppresses political opposition during a press conference in Berlin on Friday.
He said: « NATO is an alliuance of values, of course. Other issues can also be discussed here, but questions of freedom of expression and how we organise our free societies – especially in Germany – do not belong here.
« We also do not believe that anyone needs to give us advice on these. Instead, these are organised by our constitutional order, which not only guarantees the separation of powers – the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary – but also, rightly,a free media. »
