Greece’s beautiful little island with less tourists than Corfu, Crete or Santorini | World | News

Sifnos in Greece is a little-known treasure with picture-esque views and scenic landscapes. As one of the Greek islands less frequented by tourists and a population of less than 2000 people, Sifnos is the ideal destination for a quiet getaway. The coastline is only 70km long (43 miles), making it easily explorable for tourists.

Hundreds of quaint chapels are dotted across the island. They host religious festivals throughout the year, with tourists invited to join in. One of the biggest festivals is Elias the Prophet’s Name Day. The celebration is held in July at the highest peak in Sifnos and involves an Evening Mass and dancing.

Despite being small in size, the island makes up for it in activities. While beach hopping and coastal walks can be a relaxing way to pass the time, the island strives to keep an ancient tradition alive. Pottery on Sifnos dates back to 3000 BC and it remains a timeless craft. Across the island, there are various traditional ceramic workshops that offer tourists the chance to gain hands-on experience in creating their own souvenirs.

Sifnos is considered the best island in Greece for food and drink. Restaurants, beach bars and food taverns all provide delicious Greek cuisine. One of the top-rated places to eat is Omega 3 on Platis Gialos beach. With a beachside view and relaxed atmosphere, dishes include sea urchin in pickled tomato water and black truffle and fig salad.

One traveller raved about their holiday on TripAdvisor.

They said: “If you like exploring and are just as happy to find a deserted windmill or spectacular monastery as you are lots of places to eat and drink well once the sun goes down, Sifnos is a gem.”

While another admired the island’s beauty.

They said: “I have just returned to Ireland after a week in Sifnos! Oh my God, I don’t know how to describe Sifnos in words! It’s beautiful. I had been looking for a traditional Greek island, off the beaten track and that’s what I found.”
