Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sensationally quit royal life five years ago, leaving behind their royal duties to carve out their own life in America. Since then, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been living on a sprawling estate in Montecito, California, which they share with their two children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
While the couple have only shared snippets of what their lives now look like at their impressive home, it is thought they are happy and content, with Harry saying last year he was “grateful” to be living in the US. However, while they have shown no signs of wanting to relocate back to the UK, Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, have spoken fondly about their ex royal cottage over the years. Meghan also once revealed a forgotten item that she had left there and rediscovered on a visit two years after settling down in America.
In a previous interview with The Cut, the duchess recalled how she returned to Frogmore Cottage in 2022 – just months before King Charles evicted them from the home in 2023 – and found a journal she had kept during her time as a senior royal.
She told The Cut: « You go back and you open drawers and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh’.
“This is what I was writing in my journal there? »
Despite mentioning her shock at finding the journal, the mum-of-two has never revealed what she had previously written in there.
It is also believed 2022 was the last time Meghan returned to the Windsor home, which the couple officially handed back the keys to in 2023 – just months after the release of Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare.
While they were no longer living in the home or the country, handing back the keys was likely to have been a sad day for the couple, who reportedly loved their life at Frogmore – just a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle on the royal estate.
Harry wrote in Spare: “We loved that place. From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there.
“We couldn’t wait to wake up in the morning, go for a long walk in the gardens, check in with the swans. Especially grumpy Steve. We met the Queen’s gardeners, got to know their names and the names of all the flowers. They were thrilled at how much we appreciated, and praised, their artistry.”
