In a world where royals are often chauffeured in luxury cars, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, stands out as a refreshing exception. The youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II has been spotted multiple times commuting on the London Underground, blending in with everyday passengers. Prince Edward, 60, has previously been spotted blending into crowds on the London Underground transport system.
In May 2022, Prince Edward was spotted on the Jubilee Line after celebrating the winners of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award scheme at Buckingham Palace. The Prince was seen striking up a conversation with another man who was carrying a similar umbrella to him as he left commuters astonished. A spokesman for the Royal Family said it is « not uncommon » for the Earl to catch the public transport system, which handles up to five million passenger journeys a day.
The London Underground is often the fastest way to navigate the city, bypassing London’s notorious traffic. Prince Edward’s decision to take the Tube suggests a no-nonsense approach to travel, emphasising efficiency. Prince Edward has built a reputation as a relatively low-key and approachable figure – by using public transport, he demonstrates a level of humility and relatability that resonates with the public. His actions also align with the broader royal push towards promoting sustainability and responsible living.
It is not the only « normal » habit of the working royal. Writing in the Daily Mail, royal editor, Rebecca English stated: « A friend who has holidayed with the Edinburghs tells me the couple happily go down to the local Co-op to get supplies. »
Rebecca also stated Prince Edward is also a « demon » BBQ-er, and can create « truly amazing » culinary delights, which is a talent inherited from his late father, Prince Philip.
Last year, his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh shared that her husband was « so happy and humbled » when the late Queen Elizabeth II made him a Knight of the Garter in 2006, and « equally delighted and moved » when King Charles made him Duke of Edinburgh.
On Monday, Prince Edward will miss the annual Commonwealth Day Service as it coincides with his 61st birthday. The Duke of Edinburgh’s absence from the key royal event has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace. His wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, will also be absent from the Westminster Abbey service.
The Duchess is scheduled to travel to New York on the same day, meaning both the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will miss the significant royal gathering.
However, King Charles is set to attend the annual Commonwealth Day Service on Monday, March 10, marking a significant public family reunion and the monarch will be joined by several key royals at Westminster Abbey in London.
This year’s Commonwealth Day theme is « Together We Thrive », celebrating the « enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family ».
