As the popular Spanish island of Majorca becomes less appealing to visitors in the wake of overtourism protests, people are looking for alternatives.
Menorca, the second-largest island in the Balearics, offers a more peaceful option for those who still want a beach holiday but without the crowds.
The island boasts year-round sunshine, stunning sandy beaches, unspoilt natural landscapes, delicious food, and a rich history and culture.
It was also awarded Unesco Biosphere Reserve status, which protects it from overdevelopment and ensures its distinctive character remains preserved.
One of its most popular attractions is Cala Turqueta, a picturesque beach with white sand and shallow clear blue waters that have been compared to the Caribbean.
One person wrote of it on Tripadvisor: « The beautiful natural bay and turquoise sea is absolutely worth the complication of the limited bus service.
« You can get there but do reserve places on the minibus both ways as even in October people were turned away, Its a 15-20 minute walk from the carpark where the bus stops. There’s a small cafe in the carpark where you can buy drinks and snacks.
« The area is popular for walkers so the public maps are a little complicated. Just head straight down and you’ll get to the lovely, pristine beach. »
Another person wrote: « We were on the island for a week, and although it is small, we didn’t have enough time. Menorca, for those who like beaches and unspoiled coves, is a paradise that can compete with the beaches of the Caribbean.
« Personally, the coves I liked the most were Turqueta, Macarella, Macarelleta, and Cala Mitjana. I also really liked Cavalleria Beach. »
Menorca is also the perfect destination for a winter getaway, with temperatures reaching 14C in February, much warmer than the UK’s average of 7C.
The warmest months are July and August, when it can get as hot as 29C. However, these will naturally be the busiest months, so avoid them if you’re looking for a quieter holiday.
