If you’ve been to a Nando’s restaurant, the chances are you’ve opted for a refillable soft drink to get the most for your money.
That was the case for Wendy Glancy on a recent visit – until she realised a potential health issue, which she has now alerted others to. She took to TikTok urging her followers to « promise » they wouldn’t make the same mistake too.
Describing how the refillable drinks process works, she explained from her restaurant seat: « So everybody just goes up and presses the same lever to refill their drink – and they’ve just drank out of that. »
Her solution to the matter? « If ever you press the lever, do it with your finger and not your glass pressed against the lever, » Wendy advised. « Because if someone has sickness and diarrhoea or a cold and then they go up and refill their drink, they’re pressing their dirty refill of their glass on the lever and then you’re going and putting your glass on that lever as well. »
Wendy was left pondering: « How is that allowed to happen? I don’t think it’s in all Nando’s now though – I think some have a button you press instead. »
Her experience wasn’t all bad of course – Wendy showcased her mouth-watering meal – Butterfly Chicken with lemon and herbs, spicy rice and broccoli. « I love the broccoli in Nando’s, » she declared. « But just think twice about the drinks machine next time you visit. »
Wendy was met with a mixed reaction from her 267,000 followers, meanwhile. Agreeing with her concern, one TikTok user responded: « I know, it makes me feel sick. I’m a proper germ phobe and I love Nando’s. » A second added in fear: « Omg never thought about that! And cold sores and impetigo! Thanks Wendy. »
A third shared: « I look at things like this so much more since Covid began! I would never touch an elevator handle again or even anything in public, I use my sleeve if necessary. Thank you for the tip. » Whilst a fourth praised: « Excellent idea Wendy, I just never give that a thought in the past, definitely going to do that in future. »
Others dismissed the issue, however, including one Nando’s regular who penned: « I’ve been going to Nando’s and doing this for over 15 years. You’ll be fine hun. »
A second joked: « And the world kept spinning. » And a third said: « They hand you the glass – what if they went to the toilet and didn’t wash their hands, you can’t protect yourself all the time. »
Nando’s has been contacted for comment.
