Tragedy as British skier, 23, found dead at bottom of French Alps | World | News

A young British skier has been found dead at the foot of a cliff at a popular ski resort in the French Alps.

The lifeless body of the 23-year-old, who has not been publicly named, was found on Monday morning Avoriaz, which sits on a shelf above the popular resort town of Morzine.

It is believed that he had been skiing with friends before attending a party at the La Folie Douce before attempting to ski down the mountainside alone and getting lost.

Friends raised the alarm when he did not return back to his accommodation, prompting a desperate search by rescue teams.

Police believe he may have taken his skis off after realising he had made a wrong turn and plunged to his death.

Search amd rescue teams scoured the area on Sunday evening before finding the body the following day.

He was evacuated by helicopter before being declared dead by emergency workers and identified by family, authorities said.

A local police spokesman told The Sun: « The deceased is an English national who is thought to have been skiing on Sunday evening. His family have been informed. »

An inquiry has been opened to determine the cause of death.

A FCDO spokesperson said: « We are supporting the family of a British man who died in France and are in contact with the local authorities. »

Accidents are common around the cliff on which Avoriaz sits, especially when it gets dark in the evenings or it is particularly misty.

A 13-year-old died in the area in 2018 after falling 80 metres off the cliff.

The boy and his badly injured 10-year-old brotherwere found at the bottom of the drop. They brothered appeared to have got lost, removed their skis and entered a forest, before falling off a 150m (500ft) cliff.
