5 best Cillian Murphy movies after The Immortal Man | Films | Entertainment

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man official Netflix trailer

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man sees Irish star Cillian Murphy returning to one of his most iconic roles, Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby.

In the new film now on Netflix, Tommy is forced out of his self-imposed exile and returns to Small Heath, where his unpredictable son Erasmus ‘Duke’ Shelby (played by Barry Keoghan) has taken over the gang and has struck up a deal to distribute counterfeit currency for the Nazis.

A continuation of the beloved BBC series created by Steven Knight, The Immortal Man may be the conclusion of Tommy’s story but will soon be followed by two new seasons of Peaky Blinders, which will introduce a new generation of gangsters in post-World War II Birmingham.

Before that, countless fans are expected to tune in on Netflix to witness the show’s first epic feature film, which also hit cinemas on 6th March.

As Murphy says goodbye to one of his most iconic roles, let’s take a look at some of his best and most underrated films that are available to stream.

Fans who watched The Immortal Man on Netflix needn’t look any further for their next dose of the Peaky Blinders star as one of Murphy’s latest films is also streaming on the platform.

Steve finds him in another leading role, this time as a headteacher of a school for boys with behavioural problems. It’s based on the novel Shy by Max Porter, who wrote the script, and also stars Murphy’s Immortal Man co-star Jay Lycurgo.

One IMDb reviewer called both stars Oscar-worthy and said: “Truly heartbreaking performances that make you feel deeply.” Another fan called the film a “must-see” and said it “left me deeply moved and utterly captivated”.

If you loved Steve and The Immortal Man, another recent Murphy-led film you should definitely check out is Small Things Like These, also based on a bestselling novel by Claire Keegan.

Another unassuming yet powerful leading role from the Peaky Blinders star drives this quietly devastating film about a father and coal merchant in a small Irish town who unearths a horrific truth at the heart of a local convent.

An enthusiastic reviewer claimed “it deserves far more recognition”, and wrote: “This film is a brilliant piece of art, featuring outstanding performances and a story that is both deeply touching and genuinely terrifying. It’s a rare combination of emotional depth and psychological horror that leaves a lasting impact.”

Inception – Sky

From sensitive, withdrawn indie dramas to blockbuster spectacle, Inception is still one of the most mind-boggling Hollywood films of the 21st Century and features Murphy in a key role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Peaky Blinders star portrays the heir to a vast business empire whose subconscious is targeted by a team of criminals who are able to enter dreams in order to shut down his father’s company.

A reviewer said of the iconic Christopher Nolan film: “A one-of-a-kind mind-blowing masterpiece! In my opinion, it’s been so far the greatest achievement in [Nolan’s] brilliant writer-director career.”

Murphy most recently collaborated with Nolan for the smash-hit Oppenheimer, which won him both an Oscar and a BAFTA award.

28 Days Later – Sky

One of Murphy’s earlier roles that helped catapult him to stardom is in the thrilling British zombie film 28 Days Later, in which he stars as a coma patient who awakens to discover the UK has been overrun with a rage-inducing virus, leaving only a handful of survivors.

An IMDb user claimed the Danny Boyle film is “a modern classic”, adding: “I have no doubt it will go down in history as a classic, the one movie which perfectly sums up the confused era we are living in.

“And even if you didn’t like it, it would be advisable to give 28 Days Later another chance; it’s a haunting experience when looked at from the right angle.”

If 28 Days Later is already one of your favourites, make sure to check out the recent follow-ups, 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Red Eye – Paramount+

This unhinged thriller is undoubtedly one of Murphy’s most underseen and underrated performances of his career. Also starring Rachel McAdams and Brian Cox, this deliriously entertaining and unpredictable psychological horror pits a helpless passenger against a terrorist plot during a red-eye flight from Dallas to Miami.

Released in 2005, horror mastermind Wes Craven, best known for A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, helmed this unsung masterpiece that has since grown a considerable cult following.

“My blood pressure was sky high after seeing this film,” one fan claimed. “This movie was excellent. One of Wes Craven’s best to date.”
